Resume

Dr Nikki Verrills is a cancer biologist based at the University of Newcastle and the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). She is an ARC Future Fellow and her research interests' centre on understanding the molecular changes that occur as a normal cell becomes cancerous, and as cancer cells become resistant to chemotherapies. Her major focus is on breast cancer and leukaemia. In current work funded by the Cancer Council NSW, she has identified a new protein that is switched off in aggressive cancers. She has developed new agents that can target this protein, switching it back on, and killing the cancer cells. Using a range of novel preclinical models and strong collaboration with our clinical teams, the goal of her work is to translate these research findings into improved therapies for cancer patients – ultimately leading to greater patient survival.
