Resume

Dr Jay Horvat is Senior Lecturer in immunology and microbiology and based in the Priority Research Centre for Healthy Lungs at the University of Newcastle. Since the award of his PhD in 2008, he has played a major role in establishing an internationally competitive research program with Prof Phil Hansbro that focuses on investigating the association between lung infections, pollution, diet and dysregulated processes in the lung and and respiratory disease. He has developed novel experimental models of neonatal, infant and adult lung infections and adult asthma that are representative of human disease. He has also established models of high fat diet-induced obesity and dietary and genetic models of iron overloading. He has used these models to significantly advance the understanding of the immunological and pathophysiological interactions between different environmental, dietary and endogenous factors and asthma. In particular he has developed highly representative models of severe asthma and is using the models to identify novel therapeutic targets for this disease which currently has poor treatment options.
