Philosophy Courses

Philosophy courses in Sydney. Study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence.

Philosophy is a discipline that exercises reason and logic in an attempt to understand reality and answer fundamental questions about knowledge, life, ethics & morality and human nature. Philosophy aims to examine the fundamental assumptions that inform people’s thinking and lives, and in the process to show how they can do so for themselves. This involves looking at the arguments for or against various positions, examining their historical, cultural and intellectual contexts, and critically appraising and evaluating those arguments. Precisely because of its fundamental nature, philosophy has its roots right back to the ancient Greeks and other ancient civilisations. As used originally by the ancient Greeks, the term ‘philosophy’ meant the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, and comprised all areas of speculative thought, including the arts, sciences and religion.

Philosophers not only seek answers to the fundamental questions of human existence but strive to keep pace with technology and science to answer questions that have yet to be asked. Today, philosophers can be found working in nearly every career field. Some are scientists developing ways to test household products without using animals, some are politicians and human rights activists fighting for changes in foreign policy that will alleviate war and poverty for millions of Third World citizens. Some are economists seeking practical solutions to economic inequality. Learn Philosophy with Philosophy courses in Sydney – short courses created for you by the University of Newcastle.
