This research methods course will enable you to strengthen your understanding of research methodologies in order to better meet the needs of your organisation that you are conducting research for. This research methods course will serve as a refresher to participants who have conducted research in the past or are seeking to apply formal research methodologies in a new setting. In so doing, the course will provide a broad overview of research methods to assist you in designing and conducting your research enquiry, as well as interpreting and evaluating research findings.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this research methods course you will:

  1. Be able to formulate a research problem and translate this problem into a research question with salient objectives.
  2. Understand the process for conducting a literature review.
  3. Know how to write a research proposal with a supporting business case.
  4. Be able to apply the scientific method when designing, empirical evidenced-based research.
  5. Understand the distinction between deductive and inductive research.
  6. Gaining an understanding of the difference between secondary and primary research and being mindful of the increasing sources of secondary information before deciding to undertake primary research.
  7. Proficient in a range of primary research techniques, including qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research techniques.
  8. Be mindful of ethical considerations when conducting primary research.
  9. Understand the difference between cross-sectional and longitudinal designs.
  10. Gain an understanding of the methodologies used across the spectrum of qualitative research techniques including case studies, ethnography, in-depth interviews and focus groups.
  11. Know how to analyse and report on qualitative research finding in light of the research objectives.
  12. When undertaking quantitative research, to make a considered choice between surveys and experiments given the objectives of the research and the data analysis required to test hypotheses.
  13. Consider choice of sampling and design techniques when conducting surveys and experiments.
  14. Have an appreciation of the statistical techniques needed for evaluating the data generated from surveys and experiments.
  15. Know how to report on research findings so as to answer the research objectives.

Course Content

This research methods course will cover the following content:

Part I

  • Identifying a research problem and translating this problem into a research question with accompanying objectives
  • The steps for undertaking a disciplined literature review
  • Exploring the large and increasing amount of secondary data available today
  • Preparing a research proposal or business case to justify the research enquiry
  • Generating hypotheses for testing
  • Understanding the scientific method as a the basis for research enquiry using an empirical, evidenced based approach
  • An overview of primary research methodologies, using qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods designs
  • Reviewing the ethical considerations when collecting primary data

Part II

  • Deciding between qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods of primary research
  • Appreciating the distinction between cross-sectional and longitudinal research designs
  • Exploring the range of qualitative research methods including case studies, ethnography, in depth interviews and focus groups. Discerning the applicability of each of these methods to a range of research problems.
  • Techniques for analysing qualitative data
  • The principles of quantitative data collection and the choice between surveys and experiments
  • Selecting the most appropriate experimental design to address the research question
  • Sampling techniques for gaining a representative sample in a survey; minimum sample sizes
  • Ensuring the data collected from surveys and experiments is suitable for the data analysis
  • Basic statistical techniques for use with quantitative data
  • Analysing and interpreting research data
  • Preparing a research report that addresses the research question and addresses the implications of the findings accordingly

Intended Audience

This research methods course is suitable for anyone who would like to enrich their understanding of the use of research methods or begin to learn how to use them. This research methods course is designed for those in the workplace needing to design, conduct or evaluate research findings, regardless of whether this be in government, the not-for-profit sector or commercial enterprise.

Delivery Style

This research methods will explain research concepts, work through practical problems and provide guided answers. In so doing, this research methods course will both research knowledge and then develop real world ability in using this knowledge. Participants will have an opportunity to apply the course material to a project they are currently working on if they so choose. Delivery of the course across two parts allows participants to reflect on the skills acquired in part one for applying to the research designs covered in part two.
