This poetry course covers the fundamental aspects of writing publishable poems: how to develop a distinct voice, how to edit a poem and shape a manuscript and provide general guidelines for seeking publication. This poetry course also covers the basics of working with the line, choosing which poetic form to work in, working with syntax, grammar and punctuation, images and figure of speech, as well as paying close attention to the establishment of tone.

Learning Aims

This poetry course aims to:

  • Guide participants through the process of reading their own, and others' work critically.
  • Provide the basic skills of editing and selecting their own work.
  • Provide guidelines and strategies for getting their poetry published.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this poetry course participants should have an understanding on:

  1. The poetic form, from the line to the stanza and beyond.
  2. How to establish tone in your poetry through voice, point of view, punctuation, syntax and word choice.
  3. How to edit a poem and to shape a manuscript to the submission stage.

Intended Audience

This poetry course is suitable for all levels of experience in writing poetry.

This poetry course will be delivered as an interactive workshop and may consisting of an instructor-led lecture, group and individual activities. This training approach allows participants to work through concepts introduced by the trainer in an application-focused teaching environment.
