In this digital documentary course you will be introduced to factual content creation processes, whilst learning about 4K video cameras, lighting, location sound and interview technique.

This digital documentary course goes deeper to deconstruct ethical issues of representation or reality, and the underpinning film theory that will decode the process and style over substance issues related to documentary, research, writing, production and broadcast.

This digital documentary course will empower emerging documentary makers to record and edit better documentaries to distribute on the web or prepare for funding proposals. It will enable participants to formulate stories using research, process, planning and technology for distribution.

Intended Audience

This digital documentary course will suit, journalism, media and writing students. It will also suit academics, intellectuals artists and community leaders and community-minded storytellers looking to stimulate social enquiry. Photographers transitioning from stills to video will also take this digital documentary course to extend their skill to the next level.

Delivery Style

In this digital documentary course participants will take part in plenary sessions to identify and plan their first documentary. Participants will take part in camera, sound and editing demonstrations as well as examining and discussing video content relevant to documentary production techniques.

Between sessions, participants will be set optional tasks each week to consolidate the concepts introduced by the instructor. This will provide the opportunity to:

  • Write a synopsis for their documentary and film readings.
  • Prepare an interview strategy.
  • Prepare equipment and shoot a documentary.
  • Edit their documentary.

Course Materials

There are no technology requirements for participants attending this digital documentary course. However, it is advantageous to have access to the following for the duration of the course;

  • DSLR Camera
  • Tripod
  • Headphones
  • Sound recording device and/or lapel microphone
  • A computer with access to an editing software is also recommended but not essential.

Adobe Premiere Pro will be referred to during the course as a video editing software option, is you are not familiar with this software you may be interested in attending our Adobe Premiere Pro Course.

There are no prerequisites for this digital documentary course and it is opent to all members of the general public.

About your instructor

Antony Cirocco

Antony Cirocco

Antony is a professional educator in the Film and Photography space. Antony has been the program manager for the largest photography education programme in Australia and has managed Australia’s largest film education programme for youth at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS). Antony specialises in teaching Documentary, Photography and Screen Production.

Photography – 24 years

Antony has worked with exclusive high-end clients such as Baxter Healthcare International, the National Museum of Australia, Informa Mining Conventions International, the Adelaide City Council, plus various Local Government Associations in NSW and SA. Antony continues to shoot for corporate clients and still contributes to community and charity events through photography when time allows.

Documentary – 20 years

Film and television projects over the last 16 years have included for Antony producing, directing and editing over 300 television commercials and music videos. Antony edited a feature-length documentary “Chasing Shadows” which was aired nationally on ABC1 and won Documentary of the Year 2008 at the SASA awards. Antony produced and directed the feature-length documentary “The Long Walk Home” which screened nationally.
