Serving and celebrating tea the Chinese way is used for major celebrations, weddings and even to offer a formal apology. It is a mark of respect. In this Chinese course you will learn a brief history of Chinese tea and be introduced to different varieties of tea. You will experience a tea making ceremony from preparation, brewing through to tasting some fine tea. You will appreciate the healthy, creative and gentle art of Chinese tea making and its culture. This Chinese course is intended for people who are interested and would like to learn more about Chinese tea making, its ceremonial uses and its culture.

This Chinese course will cover the following content:

  • History of Chinese tea culture and its uses in modern China today.
  • Methodology and philosophy of the Chinese Tea Ceremony.
  • Seven necessities of Chinese daily life.
  • Plants and classes of teas:
    • Green tea.
    • Yellow tea.
    • White tea.
    • Oolong tea.
    • Black tea.
    • Dark tea.
    • Pu’er Tea.
  • Skills for making tea.
  • Function and etiquette of Chinese tea ceremonies.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of tea ware.
  • Sampling of selected tea.

This Chinese course is suitable for people who are interested and would like to learn more about Chinese tea making, its ceremonial uses and its culture.

Delivery Style

This Chinese course will be delivered as an interactive workshop consisting of an instructor-led lecture and group activities. Participants will experience a tea making ceremony and will have the opportunity to sample some fine Chinese tea.

Course Prerequisites

This Chinese course has no prerequisites and is open to all members of the public.

As Deputy Director Jonathan provides academic leadership to the Institute, overseeing our courses, study tours and schools' program, including the establishment of affiliated Confucius Classrooms in schools. Jonathan is an Associate Professor of English at Central China Normal University, our partner university in China.

Previously he was a visiting scholar and helped establish the very successful Confucius Institute at University of Kansas, USA. Jonathan has a Bachelor degree in English Language and Literature from Central China Normal University, a Masters degree in American Studies from University of Kansas, and 25 years of teaching experiences in tertiary institutions.
