The course is about the subject of Chemistry and will contain areas that are covered in the HSC. The course is relevant to a wide range of areas that are relevant to Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) subjects and would be important for students entering University in many areas.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will benefit from an increase in knowledge and awareness of Chemistry in the world that we live in. Participants will see the relevance of Chemistry in many industries. Participants will enjoy learning the specifics of this subject in a new and different environment.

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Establish an appreciation of the central role of chemistry in science and technology.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of chemical language, representations, structures and symbolism.
  3. Solve simple problems in both practical and theoretical contexts.
  4. Develop competency in scientific reasoning, analysis of problems and note-taking.
  5. Conduct independent research.
  6. Apply their knowledge and skills in an examination setting.

Year 11 topics covered:

  • Fundamentals of Chemistry.
  • Chemical interactions and driving forces.
  • Equilibrium of acids.
  • Applications of Chemistry.

Year 12 topics covered:

  • Properties and structure of matter.
  • Introduction to quantitative Chemistry.
  • Reactive Chemistry.
  • Drivers of reactions.
  • Equilibrium reactions.
  • Acid/Base reactions.
  • Organic Chemistry.

Intended Audience

  • HSC students.
  • Any student with an interest in Chemistry.
  • Parents are also welcome.

Delivery Style

A combined seminar and interactive workshop.
