Learn Career Development with Career Development courses in Sydney at NEWCourse – created for you by the University of Newcastle.

The Employability Boot Camp is an enhancement program for Postgraduate coursework and Ph.D. candidates, initiated by the University of Newcastle Sydney together with employers. The program will equip you with business relevant skills that will prepare you for employment once they have completed their program.

The twenty (20) selected graduates who participate in the boot camp will undergo eight (8) half-day modules, conducted on Saturday mornings by the Dean’s team together with alumni and industry practitioners.

Students, who complete the employability boot camp, will be granted access to one or more of the following:

  • a mentoring program with UON alumni and business practitioners.
  • iLEAD Plus Program, corporate walk tours, Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and internship opportunities.
  • scholarships.
  • business team competitions eg. Enactus.
  • interviewing skills delivered by hiring employers with the aim of securing work experience and potential employment if available.
  • mentoring.

Learning Objectives

The Employability Boot Camp is designed to allow you to:

  1. Develop self-awareness to manage and cope with work pressure.
  2. Develop own professional goals in relation to future career aspirations.
  3. Develop intercultural competence and emotional stability.
  4. Know how to work successfully in teams.
  5. Develop professional business skills including presentation skills.
  6. Know how to manage tasks and time to deliver tangible outcomes.
  7. Know how to make new and sustain connections.

Application Process

Step One – Register for information session

Candidates interested in taking part in the Employability Boot Camp will need to register for the compulsory Boot Camp kick-off session scheduled for Saturday 3 March 2018, click here to register.

Step Two – Submit an online application

Candidates who have attended the Boot Camp kick-off session will be directed to complete their online application. Information on the application process will be made available to each candidate including application cut off dates.

Step Three – Attend interview

The selected shortlist of candidates will then be interviewed by a selection panel before offers are made to the twenty (20) successful candidates.

Your Leadership Brand

Saturday 7 April 2018 (10am – 2pm)

  • Develop your visibility: demeanour, professional grooming, resume, business card.
  • Identify potential personal sponsors: e.g. mentor.
  • Create your brand statement.

The Power of Networking

Saturday 12 May 2018 (10am – 2pm)

  • Build your confidence skills.
  • Develop and activate your network of connections and relationships.
  • Learn how to introduce yourself and work the ‘room’.
  • Learn how to reinforce business relationships.

Developing Your Career Portfolio

Saturday 2 June 2018 (10am – 2pm)

  • Understand the job market and keep abreast of the trends.
  • Polish your resume including choosing your referees wisely.
  • Develop a career portfolio: collecting the evidence.
  • Target potential employment opportunities.
  • Understand and respond to selection criteria.

Professional Communications

Saturday 21 July 2018 (10am – 2pm)

  • Set and communicate expectations eg. culture and agenda differences.
  • Identify and develop your personal communication style.
  • Understand the role of culture, stereotypes and bias.
  • Use active listening techniques and effective questioning skills.
  • Give and receive appropriate feedback

Inside the Workplace

Saturday 1 September 2018 (10am – 2pm)

  • Understand workplace dynamics.
  • Navigate the hierarchy.
  • How to work in small groups and project teams.
  • Understand Supervisor expectations.

Engaging in Challenging Conversations

Saturday 8 September 2018 (10am – 2pm)

  • Learn how to confront thorny issues.
  • Deal with productive vs unproductive conflict.
  • Learn how to resolve issues.
  • Learn how to state your position and perspective clearly.

Pitching a Proposal

Saturday 20 October 2018 (10am – 2pm)

  • Understand the power of planning.
  • How to develop and pitch an idea.
  • Understand audience expectations.

How to Land your Dream Job

Saturday 10 November 2018 (10am – 2pm)

  • Prepare for the job interview, including skills assessments delivered by employers.
  • How to make an impact at the interview.

Intended Audience

The Employability Boot Camp is open to:

  • University of Newcastle Postgraduate students.
  • Postgraduate studentsfrom other universities*.
  • Members of the general public* and recently completed postgraduates*.

The Employability Boot Camp is designed for University of Newcastle postgraduate students who are seeking to improve their employability skills. The program is also available to postgraduate students from other universities however a registration fee* will apply to sucessfull candidates from other universities. The Employability Boot Camp or modules within the program are also available to members of the general public and recently completed postgraduates at a fee*, contact us via email or phone to discuss your indiviual training needs.
