The Employability Boot Camp is an enhancement program initiated by the University of Newcastle Sydney together with employers. The program will equip you with business relevant skills that will prepare you for employment once you have completed your program. The Employability Boot Camp is also relevant for Postgraduate students and Ph.D. candidates, recently completed students and members of the public who are seeking career development.

The twenty (20) graduates who participate in the boot camp will undergo eight (8) half-day modules, conducted on Saturday mornings by the Dean’s team together with alumni and industry practitioners.

Participants who complete the employability boot camp, will be granted access to one or more of the following:

  • a mentoring program with UON alumni and business practitioners.
  • iLEAD Plus Program, corporate walk tours, Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and internship opportunities.
  • scholarships.
  • business team competitions eg. Enactus.
  • interviewing skills delivered by hiring employers with the aim of securing work experience and potential employment if available.
  • mentoring.

Learning Objectives

The Employability Boot Camp is designed to allow you to:

  1. Develop self-awareness to manage and cope with work pressure.
  2. Develop own professional goals in relation to future career aspirations.
  3. Develop intercultural competence and emotional stability.
  4. Know how to work successfully in teams.
  5. Develop professional business skills including presentation skills.
  6. Know how to manage tasks and time to deliver tangible outcomes.
  7. Know how to make new and sustain connections.

Your Leadership Brand

Professor Ann Brewer is the Dean, University of Newcastle, Sydney. Her career has spanned organisational behaviour, psychology, education and business as a researcher, lecturer, and author. Her research expertise is people at work including conflict, change, leadership, commitment, stress as well as gender.

Ann is an accredited executive coach with more than 20 years of experience enhancing the performance of individuals, teams and organisations. In that capacity she designs and develops coaching programs for whole-of-organisations as well as 1:1 coaching consultations. She begins with establishing a foundation for each client to clarify their professional aims and values for developing and sustaining leadership resilience. Her coaching strategy is focused on leadership, relationship and culture building as well as dealing with thorny issues and conducting difficult conversations.

Ann’s professional background incorporates diverse programs and initiatives for individual development, team building, organisation design, and facilitation. Her practical approach to leadership and organisation development is derived from her own senior leadership positions.

Her work has been applied in diverse industry sectors such as business, education, industrial relations, human resource management, health administration, public policy, transport and logistics; banking and mining. She has led commercial facing entities including a start-up to success.

Hayley Angell is Relationship Manager at CPA Australia; strengthening the connection between students, universities and the profession. Podcaster, YouTuber and one-time Scottish TV presenter, Hayley has over 10 years' experience in student and graduate development, having worked with thousands of young professionals in Australia, UK, Europe and the U.S. with brands like MasterCard, BHP Billiton, Deutsche Bank and Virgin Media. Known for her energetic style and highly interactive content, Hayley specialises in the topics of networking, confidence, career success and public speaking. She loves to challenge people to tread their own path, pursue personal excellence and not fear mistakes. Her cocktail party claim to fame? Hosting the Asia Pacific Cities Summit young professionals program alongside Sir Richard Branson.

Owen is a passionate entrepreneur with a mission to revolutionise graduate employability through work-readiness training and work experience programs. He is an active speaker in areas such as Work Integrated Learning (WIL), Internships, work readiness, employability, job search and career success skills.

Owen built on a career foundation in Accounting (PwC & IT) and has since gone on to build successful businesses in Recruitment & Training. Owen holds an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) and a Bachelor of Economics (BEc) in Accounting & Finance from Macquarie University. He is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and CPA Australia.
