Book Club Course: Cultural Diversity

Literature courses in Sydney. Open to the general public.

Learn Literature with Literature courses in Sydney at NEWCourse – created for you by the University of Newcastle.

Stories, oral and written assist in the understanding of not only cultural differences but also differences that can lead to disagreements. In each of the three meetings of this book club, participants will consider one novel through a facilitated discussion considering the human narrative and its psyche as well as the author’s voice and stance and that of each of the main characters. Comparing fact and fiction and how it relates to our own lives will be discussed, the protagonists' conundrums and their cultures and values that are strikingly different from ours, the way language sets up unexpected implications, and the ways in which misperceptions, when understood, provide real learning. Other issues will be raised by participants.
